UCLA men’s basketball fall to Oregon on the road

EUGENE, Ore. >> Dillon Brooks hit a 3-pointer with 0.8 seconds left to give No. 21 Oregon an 89-87 victory over No. 2 UCLA on Wednesday night in the Pac-12 opener for both teams.

Brooks, who finished with 23 points and nine rebounds, grabbed Bryce Alford’s missed free throw with 8.

Hart basketball denies Grant coach Howie Levine victory No. 500

SANTA CLARITA >> The Howie Levine Watch was in full effect.

Sitting on 499 career victories, his Grant boys basketball team gave Hart an unexpected push in pool play at the Hart Tournament.

Ultimately Hart was too disciplined and too balanced and pulled away in the second half for a 47-37 victory, but that did not prevent Levine from having a little fun with longtime Hart coach Tom Kelly after the game.

Chimezie Metu helps USC men’s basketball remain undefeated

CORVALLIS, Ore. >> Chimezie Metu had 19 points and eight rebounds and No. 22 USC remained undefeated with a 70-63 victory over Oregon State on Wednesday night in the Pac-12 opener for both teams.

Jordan McLaughlin had 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals and Jonah Mathews had 10 points for the Trojans (14-0).

Davis leads Pelicans by Clippers 102-98

NEW ORLEANS >> Anthony Davis highlighted a 20-point performance with a soaring, one-handed alley-oop dunk during a pivotal fourth-quarter spurt and the suddenly surging New Orleans Pelicans beat the Clippers 102-98 on Wednesday night.

Buddy Hield scored 17 points for New Orleans, which was won three consecutive games.

Late field goal gives Utah bowl win

SANTA CLARA >> Joe Williams ran for 222 yards and a touchdown and Andy Phillips kicked a 27-yard field goal with 1:24 to play to lead Utah to its 14th victory in its past 15 bowl games, 26-24 over Indiana in the Foster Farms Bowl on Wednesday night.

Tyler Huntley ran for another score and the Utes (9-4) forced three turnovers to spoil Tom Allen’s coaching debut at Indiana (6-7) and improve Utah coach Kyle Whittingham’s bowl record to 10-1.

Canucks’ Miller stops Kings, 4-1

VANCOUVER, British Columbia >> Ryan Miller made 36 saves to lift the Vancouver Canucks over the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Miller was nearly unbeatable even as the Kings outshot the Canucks 37-20, including 31-8 over the final 40 minutes.

Returning from the NHL’s Christmas break, the Canucks earned only their second win in the past five games.

Hart girls soccer continues early surge by beating Agoura, Dos Pueblos

SANTA CLARITA >> The gauntlet had been thrown down.

When the Hart High School girls soccer team learned it had been moved to the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs, coach Guilherme Mitrovitch ramped up the schedule.

In addition to tough nonleague matches against Notre Dame, Quartz Hill, San Marcos and Arcadia, Hart entered the Aliso Cup and took on the likes of Bishop Amat, Orange Lutheran, Aliso Niguel and Arcadia.
